I lay in bed in such silence that not even the sound of whistling grass in the early morning breeze was herd, nor the rubbing of branches against the old tin shed that lay lonely in the shadow of the moonlight at the back of the yard.
Suddenly out of all the silence I hear a car come screaming around the corner at a 100 miles per hour, and then a faint siren in the distant coming towards the screaming car. I looked at my clock 5:48am. I thought to myself dont people have anything better to do at this time of the night it was almost dawn.
Those so distant sounds of sirens came screaming around the corner of Shades Avenue which was the road that we lived on since I was a little kid, 10 years actually. The screeching tyres of the run-away car came flying around that same corner once again, screeching and squealing the night away, that hot engine under the hood sounded as if it needed a rest. Smash there was a huge noise that sounded as if a truck that transported glass had just had an accident, bit like the sound of something collapsing or giving way with huge force that made a horrific sound.
I looked out my bedroom window to see what had happened. I saw the car that the police where chasing rapped around the tree steaming and smashed. OHH NO I thought to myself what am I going to do? Should I go and see if they are ok? Should I. I know, I ran out of my bedroom, slide around the corner-yelling DAD, DAD straight into his room with the burning sensation on the bottom of my feet. At that time the noise of the accident had woken him and he was sitting at the end of his bed preparing to get up into the coldness of early dawn and see what all the emotion was all about. What son, WHAT? What was that banging noise that woke me? Theres a, theres a.. I couldnt tell him I was to scared, what son, WHAT? Spit it out he said to me what is it? I finally came out with it, there was a car rapped around a tree outside our front yard, WHAT he replied yeah I said with shock.
We walked outside and dad saw the car rapped around the tree BLOODY HELL he said when he had a clear view of the reck of the car. Wait there he said So I waited at the front gate while dad was investigating the reck of the accident. Even though I couldnt see anything I still felt the smell of death drifting towards me and becoming stronger and stronger. AMBULANCE, AMBULANCE dad yelled from the other side of the street, Ben go and get an ambulance quick I bolted straight inside to dial 000 and for some reason even after seeing the reck of the car couldnt explain to the operator what had happened. Calm down, Calm down the operator insisted, I took a deep breath and tried to explain the situation and the assistance that would be required.
After speaking to the operator and explaining what had happened I walked slowly back out the front to see if dad was coping, I see him lying against the car in tears, I say dad whats happened why are you in tears from the other side of the street. Stay their son he replies. What is it dad I yell across the street to try and get a reply? He screams at the top of his voice stay the bloody hell there Ben dont come over here.
I took his advice and stayed at the other side of the street until help came which wasnt long after the call, which was maid from me like 4 minutes before hand, but that 4 minutes was the longest of my life. You know when something really exciting happens or you just want things to speed up so that whatever you are nervous about or scared about will just be over in a split second, but seems to drag on for what it feels to be a lifetime
After standing in the damp dawn air of that winters morning after 4 minutes the paramedics, police and fire brigade all arrived in 30-second intervals. I heard one of the paramedics say doesnt look good to his co-worker as he got out of there Ambulance. Immediately after they arrived one of the three paramedics assisted me in asking if I was ok. I replied Im fine I wasnt involved in the accident as I stood outside my very own home. I managed to catch a glimpse at dad as he was getting questioned by the police he looked stressed like id never seen before. I decided to go over to the reck and see what was happening and to see if dad was ok. I didnt even manage to land one foot on the ground before one of the 7 police officers said in quiet a pushy tone, Jesus I thought to myself arent they on the ball.
After about half an hour of standing on the corner watching the fire brigade saw into the car to try and free the victims of what looked a very serious accident. Dad decided to come over to see if I was ok. Are you ok their son, he said? Yeah I spose I answered with a little temper.
After that little outburst I had to ask dad if everyone that was involved in the accident was ok. Ive never seen dad stand in front of me with such silence before, but I chose not to say anything, I thought ill give him time to explain. But I couldnt help it he just stood there and I wanted to know what was going on. DAD I yelled at him. Sorry, sorry he replied as he watched them pull the first victim out of the car. He said quietly to me Ben someone very close to us is in that car and I want you to know that what ever happens that you cant be made at me for holding off this long to tell you. But James is in that car, WHAT I said, James it cant be I tried to contemplate why? But I couldnt understand how it could be but then I saw them pulling him from the reck. There was blood and people confused everywhere. James has been one of my best mates, he is more like a brother than a friend thats why its so hard to contemplate this. Even though Im angry at dad for not telling me this earlier I spose it shows just how much he protects me and that makes me feel like I belong and that he would do anything for me to prevent injury or just everyday problems.
After not sleeping for about 3 nights I decided to go and see James in hospital, this was scary for me because I hadnt known anyone to be in hospital for me to visit before. I walked into his room and saw him lying there with one leg in the air bandages on his head and his left arm veering in the air towards the ceiling. After 3 weeks in hospital he was able to go home and he made a steady recovery and is now back playing football as good as ever.
To this day I still havent asked why he was driving that car or why he did it, and to tell you the truth I dont want to know.
